Police nab 13 suspects in deadly stabbing, communal clash in Edo

Benin, Edo – The Edo State Police Command announced the arrest of 13 suspects on Thursday amid a violent uproar following the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Chigozie Ifeonu in the Ogheghe Community along Upper Siluko Road.

The incident, which unfolded on October 28, has ignited tensions between local Benin youths and Hausa residents, leading to street clashes, injuries, and a swift police crackdown.

According to a statement from the command, the altercation erupted around 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday when Ifeonu, popularly known as "Chizi Benz," was stabbed in the chest during a confrontation.

Eyewitnesses and police reports indicate the stabbing stemmed from a botched hire-purchase deal involving a motorcycle. Ifeonu, driving his Mercedes-Benz GLK, reportedly spotted the alleged perpetrator in the Hausa quarters of the community and confronted him to reclaim the vehicle.

The suspect allegedly raised a false alarm, accusing Ifeonu of attempted theft, which drew a mob that turned deadly.

Rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Ifeonu was pronounced dead upon arrival, confirming the worst fears of his family and friends.

The killing quickly escalated into chaos as enraged Benin youths, armed with sticks, machetes, and other weapons, took to the streets in a bid for vengeance. A reprisal attack ensued, injuring several participants on both sides, with police deploying teargas to disperse the crowds and restore order.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eno Ikoedem, in the official statement, emphasized that normalcy has returned to the area.

"A total of thirteen (13) suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while the case has been transferred to the Homicide Section, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Benin City, for discreet investigation," she said.

The suspects, including individuals from both ethnic groups implicated in the stabbing and subsequent violence, remain in custody as investigations proceed.

Edo State Police Commissioner CP Monday Agbonika extended condolences to Ifeonu's grieving family, vowing that "justice will be served." He urged residents of Ogheghe and surrounding areas to exercise restraint, stay vigilant, and adhere to the law, reaffirming the command's dedication to safeguarding peace statewide.

Local sources have painted a more nuanced picture of the victim, with some describing Ifeonu as a suspected "yahoo boy" – slang for internet fraudster – which may have fueled the initial confrontation and mob response.

Despite this, community leaders and residents expressed shock at the brutality, calling for an end to ethnic profiling and vigilante justice.

"This isn't just about one death; it's about how quickly a small dispute turns into a war between brothers," one anonymous local told Daily South Nigeria.

As the investigation deepens, authorities are monitoring the area for potential flare-ups, even as the incident underscores ongoing challenges in Benin City's diverse neighborhoods, where economic disputes and ethnic frictions occasionally boil over into violence.

Police have assured the public of heightened patrols to prevent further unrest, but residents remain on edge, demanding accountability to heal the wounds of October 28.
