Today we are seeing Edolites questioning government and governance in Edo state and seeking answers to issues of accountability and transparency!! Ironically these and other worse issues of governance constituted the many "Wailing" points of the then opposition in the "DEVASTATING" Govt of Godwin Obaseki.
Before we let Emotions into the current debacle between Ossiomo Power generating plant in Edo state and CCECTC of China, let's throw and put issues in Perspective.
The main issue between Ossiomo Power Generating Company and its Chinese partner, CCECTC (Jiangsu Communication Clean Energy Technology), was a power shutdown in September 2025 caused by a dispute over the Chinese firm's desire for greater control and transparency in the company's operations.
This led to CCECTC switching off electricity from the plant, impacting customers in Edo State who relied on it for power supply to businesses and government buildings. The Edo State government has denied any involvement in the blackout!!
BACKGROUND OF THE PARTNERSHIP.
Joint Venture: Ossiomo Power Generating Company partnered with CCECTC to build and operate the 55MW gas-fired power plant in Edo State, Nigeria.
Purpose: The plant was designed to provide a stable and flexible electricity supply to government facilities, businesses, and potentially help to break the monopoly of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
Expansion Plans: The state government had plans to expand the plant's capacity to 550MW
.
NATURE OF DISPUTE
Lack of Transparency:
CCECTC felt it was not being given sufficient information or transparency regarding the operations of the firm, according to The Nation Newspaper.
Attempt to Gain Control:
This lack of transparency led CCETC to attempt to switch off the electricity supply as a way to take full control of the firm.
CONSEQUENCES
Blackout in Edo State:
The shutdown resulted in a significant lack of power supply for Ossiomo Power's customers, affecting businesses, government buildings, and some communities in Edo State.
Impact on the State Government:
The Edo State Government stated that it was not responsible for the blackout and that its own operations were affected.
