Ogan, Edo – Hundreds of articulated vehicles were on Friday morning stranded for hours along Benin-Asaba Expressway, between Ogan and Alifekede border communities of Edo and Delta States, following the assault of a truck driver by a policeman at a checkpoint in the area.

BENDEL Mirror gathered, the truck with registration number (Yobe State) NNR 896 XA was conveying cows from Agbor to Warri enroute Benin bypass when the driver was stopped at the police checkpoint.

The assault however led the driver to angrily use his truck to block the only accessable part of the dual carriage way as the other part was still under reconstruction.

According to the driver who identified himself as Hamza, the assault on him was as a result of his refusal to part with N2,000 as requested by one of the policemen.

"Around 4 to 5 early this morning, them (police) stop me, i stop, say make I bring money. I give them N1,000, them say no, say unless na N2,000. Before, we argue small. Small thing he hit me for my head", Hamza lamented to BENDEL Mirror as blood from the open wound on his head was still visible on his body.

The road blockage forced some motorists to take adjoining old Benin-Agbor road in Ogan community to continue their journey.

The policemen numbering four were however observed far away from the checkpoint apparently to avoid being mobbed by angry truck drivers anxiously waiting for the road to clear.

Some military personnel later arrived the scene to restore normalcy as even they promised to take up the matter with the police authority.
